Tech giant Meta is developing AI companions that strike up conversations proactively.
Leaked internal documents reveal that such a feature is part of Meta’s AI Studio. It enables personalized bots to recall past conversations and initiate follow-ups within a 14-day window. However, it only works if users have already sent at least five messages.
These “proactive” follow-up messages adhere to three cardinal rules, including relevance, tone, and positivity.
For example, suppose a chatbot named “The Maestro of Movie Magic” might open a conversation with a greeting before offering film recommendations. Bots pause outreach if users don’t respond.
Meta confirms ongoing testing of this follow-up messaging system on its AI Studio platform, which Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger users can easily access.

The tech giant frames the feature as a way to let users continue exploring topics of interest while building more meaningful AI interactions. It’s a welcome addition to Meta’s Llama 3.2, allowing users to leverage Meta’s ever-growing AI technologies.
Business Insider says Alignerr contractors manually review and refine these proactive messages to align with bot personas while maintaining context and tone.
The move aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s goal of addressing social isolation. However, experts say such a technology can double as a strategy to increase user engagement and retention.
Meta’s push follows a broader industry trend. Character.AI and Replika are known to have AI companions that initiate conversations.
While meaningful, this proactive stands isn’t without concerns. It brings fresh concerns about privacy and whether users truly consent. It also flags the potential of automated outreach to cross the line into intrusion.
Meta is placing boundaries. Bots can only initiate if prior engagement exists. They also cease sending proactive messages if ignored.
Regardless Meta welcomes regulators and privacy advocates to weigh in. They can consider the ethical implications of AI-initiated messaging on major social platforms.
